A Day in the Life of a Midwife Sonographer at Daisyscan

The day started with an anxious husband calling the clinic; panicking and not really sure what questions to ask or which scan to book?
To be totally honest, this could have been me 12yrs ago, when as I was embarking on my first pregnancy. Luckily, now with over 25yrs of experience in the NHS and private care sector, I am well situated to help navigate and guide clients through their care and pregnancy journeys.
The first rule is to listen. Then gather all the information to enable them to make the best, most fully informed decisions for all involved in the pregnancy.
I listened to the husband explain to me that his wife had a poor obstetric history (2 early miscarriages) and is subsequently bleeding in this pregnancy. They had been to the Early Pregnancy Unit (EPU) for a scan about a week before and all was well. However, with even more bleeding they had decided to go to A & E (Accident & Emergency) late the night before. Inevitably, this was a lengthy process and sadly ended with no ultrasound scan to offer them any kind of reassurance. An all too common occurrence due to the immense pressure the NHS is under due to lack of staff.
I am a huge supporter and loved working for the NHS, however we know that budgets are tight, appointments are in demand, time, resources and staff are stretched; there is only so much they can do.
Daisyscan is here to support you. We have the ability to sense anxiety and allay unnecessary fears. We understand each client’s needs are different, so Daisyscan tailors the care provided at each stage of pregnancy. Explaining some causes of bleeding in early pregnancy, explaining the stage of pregnancy and development with the client, allowing time to answer questions and allowing time to resolve unanswered worries is all part of what we do every day.
Are extra scans in pregnancy of any benefit? There is no evidence to show that ultrasounds are harmful and as such, a reasonable number of scans throughout a pregnancy is very common and safe. Additional scan appointments during pregnancy can be beneficial by allowing parents to be able to gain greater control of their pregnancy. Becoming more positive with the pregnancy can act as a catalyst to emotional change, increasing confidence, calmness and focus towards the pregnancy journey.
On this occasion, the pregnancy continued well and the parents had the knowledge, support and empowerment to feel more in control of the situation.
On other occasions, the information or case of the pregnancy may not have seen a good outcome; but Daisyscan is here to continue providing the support and understanding needed at that time. Directing the parents to the appropriate place and care, allowing them to still feel a sense of control. Whatever the situation, Daisyscan is well equipped to support and guide our clients through their individual journeys to parenthood.
