Being pregnant is an amazing adventure and exciting but sadly, can come with a few side effects: like sickness, interrupted sleep and extreme tiredness. However, with a little acknowledgement and understanding, here are a few tips to help:
Work
Telling your employers about the pregnancy, when you feel comfortable, may relieve the stress or anxiety that has built up. Your boss may gain a greater understanding of the pregnancy and your work rate. Let close collages know as well so they also have a great understanding when you are unable to give 100% and a little empathy will be shown. Be honest and understanding towards yourself, then when you are struggling and your colleagues are aware, at least they have the opportunity to support and help you as well.
Thinking about your options before going on maternity leave may leave you with a stronger relationship with your boss. Try to have a planned, post-pregnancy discussion; this could make you feel in greater control and therefore more contented.
Motherhood
Being pregnant when you have other children is common, yet is definitely another dimension that must not be forgotten. Rest when you can…juggle your duties so they are realistic and achievable.
Prepare the siblings for the new arrival. Let them chat to you about the pregnancy; show visual items like scan photos and continue this communication throughout the pregnancy.
If other family members want to help and support you, allow them to do this! For example, with a family meal cooked, a little cleaning or even a bit of ironing.
Diet
Enjoy eating healthily whilst pregnant. It can be hard at first, especially if you are feeling tired and sick, remember not to put too much pressure on yourself and concentrate on the easier options. Try to choose fresh over processed foods as they contain less salts and sugar. This will help you physically and mentally.
Life chores
Remember washing, ironing and cleaning will always be there tomorrow. So, when the energy levels are low, listen to you body. Another day will bring you more strength, making it easier to do the chores effectively and faster, giving you greater satisfaction (priority lists are great for ticking off).
Fatigue, sickness and feeling a little overwhelmed, with juggling everything, won’t last for ever…so support yourselves and allow others to as well. If family and friends offer to help - accept it! Don’t feel guilty! Everyone needs a little support at times.
