The second trimester of pregnancy, spanning weeks 13 to 26, marks a transformative period for expectant mothers. As morning sickness tends to subside, energy levels often increase and your baby bump becomes more noticeable. This trimester is a time of exciting milestones as you start feeling your baby's movements and maybe even learn the gender during an ultrasound.
Regular doctor's appointments continue, offering glimpses of your baby's development through scans and tests (anomaly scan in the NHS). At this stage, a healthy lifestyle is crucial, with particular emphasis placed on a balanced diet. Symptoms like back pain and heartburn may arise, which are all perfectly normal.
Staying active, with safe exercises, like prenatal yoga and walking is encouraged. As your baby's arrival approaches, start preparing for their needs; such as nursery setup and baby essentials.
Educate yourself on childbirth through prenatal classes, and take time to consider what is on offer with childbirth, birthing plans, pain relief, etc. From a home birth to the labour ward, you may like to take a tour and discuss your thoughts with your midwife.
You should also start to plan for the third trimester, including a written birth plan and what to put in your hospital bag. Enjoy this unique journey as you bond with your growing baby, and remember that each pregnancy is a unique experience.
