What Can You See on a 7-Week Ultrasound Scan?
Finding out you are pregnant can bring a mixture of excitement, anticipation and, sometimes, a lot of questions. At around seven weeks, you may be wondering what your baby looks like, whether you can see a heartbeat and whether an ultrasound scan can provide some reassurance that everything is progressing as expected.
A 7-week pregnancy scan is still very early, but there can already be a surprising amount to see.

What does a baby look like at 7 weeks?
At seven weeks pregnant, your baby is still extremely small — roughly the size of a blueberry.
Although they don't yet look like the baby you may imagine from later pregnancy scans, important development is already taking place. The embryo is beginning to develop recognisable structures, including the early formation of the head and body.
During an ultrasound, the baby may appear as a very small, curved shape within the pregnancy sac.
Because the baby is so small at this stage, the images can look quite different from the familiar ultrasound pictures you may see later in pregnancy.
Can you see the heartbeat at 7 weeks?
In many pregnancies, cardiac activity can be seen on an ultrasound scan at around seven weeks.
Rather than thinking of this as something you will necessarily hear, it is more accurate to describe it as seeing cardiac activity or the baby's heartbeat on the ultrasound image.
Exactly what can be seen depends on a number of factors, including the baby's size, the stage of pregnancy and the type of scan being performed.
Pregnancy doesn't always progress at exactly the same rate, so being a few days earlier than expected can make a noticeable difference during these very early weeks.
What else might be visible?
Depending on the stage of pregnancy and the individual circumstances, an early scan may allow the sonographer to visualise:
- The pregnancy sac
- The yolk sac
- The developing embryo
- The baby's early shape
- Cardiac activity
- The developing pregnancy within the uterus
At seven weeks, everything is still developing rapidly, which is one reason early pregnancy ultrasound images can change so much from one week to the next.
Why do some parents choose a 7-week scan?
There are many personal reasons someone may choose an early private scan.
For some parents, simply seeing the pregnancy on screen can make the pregnancy feel more real.
Others may have experienced a previous pregnancy loss or may feel particularly anxious during the early weeks of pregnancy. Having the opportunity to see their developing baby can provide an important moment of reassurance.
Some parents simply don't want to wait until their routine NHS appointment to see their baby.
Whatever your reason, an early scan can be a special opportunity to pause and acknowledge that your pregnancy has begun.
What if the scan doesn't show everything you expected?
At seven weeks, pregnancy dating can be particularly important.
If you have calculated your pregnancy based on your last menstrual period, ovulation may actually have occurred later than expected. This can mean that a pregnancy thought to be seven weeks may be slightly earlier.
Even a difference of several days can make a significant difference when the pregnancy is developing so quickly.
If something cannot be seen as expected, your sonographer can explain what is visible and discuss what may be appropriate next. Where there are clinical concerns or uncertainty requiring medical assessment, you should contact your midwife, GP or maternity team.
Is a 7-week scan a diagnostic scan?
A private early reassurance scan should not be considered a replacement for your NHS maternity care or medically indicated ultrasound examinations.
