Why are there only 2 NHS scans in pregnancy?
Most healthy women receive two scans during their pregnancy within the NHS. The first scan is usually performed in the first trimester and confirms the Estimated Due Date (EDD). The second scan is generally performed from 18 weeks and is to confirm normal anatomy and checking the physical development of the foetus (as well as looking for 11 rare conditions).
So why do women and their partners have extra scans?
Pregnancy is a whole new concept for most first-time parents. We are being taken out of our comfort zone and dropped straight into a world that is full of excitement, joy, adjustment and anxiety. All of these emotions are correct to feel, however sometimes they can just become over bearing.
This is where Daisyscan comes into its own. We can offer you further prenatal imaging and testing, giving you extra reassurance and the chance to ask any questions - talking through any pregnancy concerns and giving you extra opportunities to bond with your unborn child.
We find that Early pregnancy scans, that can be performed from as early as 6 weeks of pregnancy, can be a lifeline for anxious parents. They offer invaluable reassurance and can waylay any fears that you may have while waiting 4 – 8 weeks for your first NHS scan. It’s also a great way to get your partner involved and to really enjoy the first stages of the pregnancy together.
Daisyscan offers an opportunity to help and support clients when the pregnancy path is not as smooth or enjoyable as parents had hoped it would be. Sadly, miscarriages are common in early pregnancy (around 25%), but being well supported and nurtured through this process enables a more expansive outlook in subsequential pregnancy.
Healthy minds make for better outcomes for everyone. NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) have recommended that recognising where to support women and partners positively will promote women’s health and outcome in pregnancy. Daisyscan Early pregnancy scans provide you with a helping hand through your pregnancy. They help to reduce anxiety, increase confidence and make the process more inclusive or simply reassure when you are feeling concerned. Our hope is to bridge the gap between what the NHS offers and what extra support you might need during the whole of your pregnancy.
